Movie Review- Real Steel

Real Steel succeeds where Cowboys and Aliens failed. It manages to marry the odd couple-

robot movies with boxing movies, and the charming presence of Hugh Jackman, a new kid on the block,

and much better CGI than Transformers ensure this is a sweet family, buddy movie for a weekend.

It  may not rate very high on originality , as all sports movies do with the struggling underdog theme, the training, the Rocky deja Vu

—-but it does pack a very nice visual punch. See it to believe it, Robot boyz.  Real Steel is a real steal!

Movie Review :Bodyguard (Bollywood)

This is part of Salman Khan’s trilogy quadrology after Wanted, Dabangg, Ready and now Bodyguard  in remakes of South Indian movies with pumping slow motion /fast moving action and hummable songs, slapstick comedy, typical Bollywood drama and packaged in a nice box for you to eat and savour. This is not cinema in the class of gourmet, but cinema in the class of chat, gol gappas and hot dogs (if you get the metaphor- you will get the movie as well)

The movie is actually nice, the actors are well casted , for a change this is actually a script, the humor is bearable if 300 people in the movie theatre are laughing with you, in some places the comic scenes are good. Salman Khan starts with a wooden expression for his bodyguard facial expressions, but by the end Kareena Kapoor and Salman prove why they are the numero uno entertainers in the world’s largest  movie crazy market (by volume of movies). I liked it better than Wanted and Ready, and almost as nice as Dabangg.

and yes Salman and Kareena look  good together!

Watch it to enjoy, and take some pleasure from the simple things of life.

Happy Fourth of July

Thank you America-

for creating in no particular order of importance or chrnology

The Internet , The Atom Bomb and Men on the Moon

Hollywood Movies and Cartoons and Comics and Bbq Burgers,

Chewing gum and Rock and Roll and Stand up Comedy,

Basketball and American Football, and Sports Marketing

but on the whole, just have a good time.

Movie Review- X Men First Class

This is a movie that restores faith in the good old art of story telling with completely realistic but not in the face Computer Generated Effects.

Both Charles (as Prof X) and Erik (as Magneto) are awesome, but Erik steals the show as Michael FAsbbender plays the avenging Holocaust victim with complete and ruthless abandon. The use of Mad Men like costumes, and the flashback to history was awesome too, but the Russians were bad- same old chaps we have seen playing Russians in dozens of movies , slurring over their Rs. The interpolation of JFK, Cuban Missile Crisis and even the 1960’s chauvinistic humor really add on to this movie.

Watch it- good for both family and friends. Kevin Bacon is a steal, and lots of talented actors now join the Kevin Bacon game.

x1

Movie Review Ready

Picture of Asin Thottumkal, an Indian actress

I just saw the Bollywood Movie , Ready (2011) starring Salman Khan and Asin.  Salman Khan has been the Charlie Sheen of Indian Cinema for some time now, and the movie plays up to his charm, slapstick humor and slap full action.

Asin is a great actor, and this is not art for the sake of art- it is art to make the people laugh.

Enjoy it but with tempered expectations that you are in for some stupendous Bollywoodish humor.

The Monk who Danced

P dance
Image via Wikipedia

Some monks pray

Some monks dance

Some monks drink

All monks hope for a second chance

I have played all

kinds of funny games

Been to all kinds of places

Called all unkind names

The thrill of the chase

The prospect of romance

is rarely expressed in thudding crashes

More often expressed in dance

Here comes tango

There goes hip hop

Ballroom dancing for the propah

Disco dancing for the lower crop

This monk got grace

It helps he has style

For very soon he will start sweating

Because he has not practiced in a while

While the forbidden and elusive

Pleasures of the flesh are often the downfall

Of talented men who began to crawl

Dancing never killed anyone

and no one got killed dancing.

The wars the fights and the peacock struts

Have continued since mankind begun

Choose your arena, choose your weapon

Dancing shoes or the barrel of a gun.

Music heals what people hurt

Poetry steals what movies covet

Paintings end up hugging stony walls

But dancing above all is in the moment

Transitory like a flutter of a piano sheet

Dance now or forever hold your feet.

For the past several months, I have been member of a semi-public beta test/group/forum – that is headed by Travis Green of the Google Prediction API Team (not the hockey player). Basically in helping the Google guys more feedback on the feature list for model building via cloud computing. I couldn’t talk about it much , because it was all NDA hush hush.

Anyways- as of today the version 1.2 of Google Prediction API has been launched. What does this do to the ordinary Joe Modeler? Well it helps gives your models -thats right your plain vanilla logistic regression, arima, arimax, models an added ensemble option of using Google’s Machine Learning Continue reading “Google releases V1.2 of Google Prediction API”
