Agneepath Movie Review

When you try and make a remake of old Bollywood classic, you risk some stuff. Especially if the classic is the legendary Amitabh Bachchan’s   Agneepath that was both a commericial flop, a total hit at the awards and now a cult favorite (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agneepath)

So what can Karans Johar/Malhotra, Sanjay Dutt and Hrithik Roshan do that hasnt been done.

Well they have made the intense violence mind-blowing catchy and deliciously pulpy, with its unique Bollywood sweet sour mango flavor. Sanjay Dutt rocks the screen in evil intensity, Hrithik emotes with his eyes (wisely deciding to underplay his Vijay Deenanath Chauhan , rather than the over the top original) and even the supporting actors from the veteran Rishi Kapoor, the demure Priyanka Chopra and host of characters make this an incredibly cool movie to buy tickets for. I am sure Quentin Tarantino would find the violence inspiring – and if you have not seen Bollywood movies yet, well this is sure as good a time to start.

See it- and atleast in Mumbai, India , the movies are off to a good start in 2012.

YouTube Boxoffice for Bollywood Fans

While Hulu.com continues to be only-America centric (and so does Spotify), Youtube continues to have the best global strategy for media partnerships. I just came across http://www.youtube.com/BoxOffice and it shows the latest Bollywood movies for free (by streaming and by ads- it is sponsored by Intel 🙂  )

If you wanted to watch Bollywood and dont want to spend too much (or more likely- dont have a Bollywood rental store near you) -Check out the following movies some very new and some very classic-

Movie Review- Bollywood "Rock Star"

This one is a wee bit different. The music sounds more contemporary and fusion ,East blends West, the direction is both subtle and at times flamboyant, and the acting is notches above the average dance round the tree, laugh like a idiot fare.

Rock Star is the tale of a college dropout (aint they all!) called Jordan / by Ranbir Kapoor  musical prodigy who battles personal demons, lady luck , lady love (in the impossible pout of the American fashion model ,Nargis F), and his own musical ambitions. The breathtaking art moves from Kashmir, Prague, Europe and the streets of Delhi University. This one is a taker, breaker, soul shaker.  Try getting a sub titled DVD if you dont know Hindi, or atleast dekko some songs streaming free at http://www.saavn.com/search/hindi/album%20Rockstar

Imitiaz Ali http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imtiaz_Ali_(director) does all olde Hindu College alumni proud (including this reviewer)

Movie Review – Sahib Biwi aur Gangster (The Lord, The Wife and the Gangster)

This is the latest Bollywood smash, it is a inspired version of Sahib < Biwi < and Ghulam

It features a feudal lord, doing what gentlemen borne as gentlemen do, his bored schizophreniac wife, and the driver/gangster

There are lots of twists and turns, and it may be Bollywood’s steamiest romantic comedy/drama.

The songs are nice, the acting is superb by the cast of Randeep Hooda (D, Once upon a time in Mumbai), Mahi Gill and Jimmy Shergill.

Power packed and nice- but see it without your kids/family or you may end up blushing! Probably the closest to a noir sex comedy that I have seen in 3 decades of Bollywood watching!

Movie Review :Bodyguard (Bollywood)

This is part of Salman Khan’s trilogy quadrology after Wanted, Dabangg, Ready and now Bodyguard  in remakes of South Indian movies with pumping slow motion /fast moving action and hummable songs, slapstick comedy, typical Bollywood drama and packaged in a nice box for you to eat and savour. This is not cinema in the class of gourmet, but cinema in the class of chat, gol gappas and hot dogs (if you get the metaphor- you will get the movie as well)

The movie is actually nice, the actors are well casted , for a change this is actually a script, the humor is bearable if 300 people in the movie theatre are laughing with you, in some places the comic scenes are good. Salman Khan starts with a wooden expression for his bodyguard facial expressions, but by the end Kareena Kapoor and Salman prove why they are the numero uno entertainers in the world’s largest  movie crazy market (by volume of movies). I liked it better than Wanted and Ready, and almost as nice as Dabangg.

and yes Salman and Kareena look  good together!

Watch it to enjoy, and take some pleasure from the simple things of life.

Movie Review Ready

Picture of Asin Thottumkal, an Indian actress
Asin- Indian actor

I just saw the Bollywood Movie , Ready (2011) starring Salman Khan and Asin.  Salman Khan has been the Charlie Sheen of Indian Cinema for some time now, and the movie plays up to his charm, slapstick humor and slap full action.

Asin is a great actor, and this is not art for the sake of art- it is art to make the people laugh.

Enjoy it but with tempered expectations that you are in for some stupendous Bollywoodish humor.
