Funny HTML hack in Bit.ly on Twitter

Just saw a funny bit.ly hack/spam

scroll down to see the title tag that shows the link to my blog when I mouse-hover on the bit.ly  url.

Now you get this error message if you go here- because I changed my url structures. Note the bit.ly url is uATQ13 (:-)

http://www.decisionstats.com/2008/07/02/phpb

But if you go to bit.ly and type in

bit.ly/uATQ13

You first get a redirect to usyy.net/redirect.php?cookies=true

and then a redirect to

http://www.justz.info/mobilemoneymachines

What surprised me is the hacking of the bit.ly link

which changed the title in html (html newbies refer to http://www.w3schools.com/tags/att_standard_title.asp)

text from usyy.net/redirect.php?cookies=true to http://www.decisionstats.com/2008/07/02/phpb (see bottom of the picture) when my mousetip hovered over it. How did this happen? Is it due to my chrome extensions ..hmm..or is it my alternate identity (cyber Jekyl and Cyber Hyde)….hmmm

Now I know it has just been two days since I wrote on chrome redirect extension called mediaafire (which could be one possible reason for this since I installed it too on my chrome browser besides having the adblock extension) http://www.decisionstats.com/chrome-extension-mafiaafire/

But nice hack-huh- two days is fast!!! Someone help bit.ly/chrome/me figure this out. 😉

Chrome Extension- MafiaaFire

The chrome extension MafiaaWire basically gives you an updated list of redirected websites. So the next time , your evil highness shuts down your favorite website- the list promises to give you an update.  While obviously entertainment intellectual property is a very obvious site category for such redirects, in some cases these extensions can be used for simple things like hosting dissents or protesters against govt corruption in non US countries .

Basically under the new SOPA act (an oline version of pepper spray http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_Online_Piracy_Act) even browsers like Firefox and Chrome would be liable for any such extension that can be used to download American Intellectual property illegally.

In the meantime – this is an interesting and creative use case of technology and sociology merging in the brave new world.

You can read about it here-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAFIAAFire_Redirector

MAFIAAFire works by downloading a list which contains the names of the “blocked” sites as well as the sites to redirect to. This list is downloaded every time Firefox starts up or every two days on the Chrome version (although the user has the choice to force an update on the Chrome version instead of waiting for two days).

When a user types in a domain name from the list of blocked domains, the add-on recognizes this and automatically redirects the user to the secondary site. Since this happens before the browser connects to the DNS server, this renders any DNS blocks useless.

Although the add-on checks for which sites are entered into the address bar every time (as it needs to check if that site is on its block list), it does not log these requests nor send these requests to any central server. In other words: it does not track the user.

Google Chrome introduces in-browser ads

Just saw a text ad on my chrome browser. Not a website just the browser.

Text ads courtesy Google Chrome.

No matter what website you go- well who has the browser can show you ads. I am glad the decade long stint of browsers as a sink hole for free stuff is going to go away soon.

Hmm.

Now if Microsoft comes up with in-Desktop Ads and slices the prices it would be fun.

Holiday season starts early!

App to App Porting

I often wonder why bright, intelligent software programmers go out of their way to write turgid and lengthy words in documentation, do not make  step by step screenshot/slides for Tutorials, and practically force everyone to reinvent the wheel everytime they create a new platform.

Top of my wish list for 2012-

1) Better GUI  for APP CREATION-

example-A GUI utility to create chrome apps something similar to Android  App creator http://www.appinventorbeta.com/about/

2)  Automated Porting or Translation-

An automated appsot app for reading in an iOS app (or iPhone app) and churning out the necessary Android app code. This is similar to translating blogs from one blogging platform to another using Python at http://code.google.com/p/google-blog-converters-appengine/

but the woefully underpowered http://wordpress2blogger.appspot.com/ currently allows only downloads less than 1 MB, while WordPress itself allows 15 MB export files.

3) Better interaction between cloud and desktop apps

example – (google docs and libre office)  or webcams to (google hangouts and google voice /youtube)

Are we there yet? Not appy enough !

Some future additions to Google Docs

1) More Presentation Templates

2) More HTML 5 clipart

3) Online Latex (lyx) GUI  (or a Chrome Extension)

4) Online Speech to Text dictation  (or a Chrome Extension)

5) Online Screen Capture software for audio and video editing  (or a Chrome Extension)

6) Some sharing of usage and statistics with world tech community

7) An on -site in house version for enterprise software customers (|?)

8) An easy to make HTML5 editor using just the browser

Seriously http://googledocs.blogspot.com/ needs to be challenged more.

Facebook to Google Plus Migration

and there is a new tool on that already but you are on your own if your data gets redirected. Does Chrome take legal liability for malware extensions? Dunno-and yes it works on Chrome alone (at the point of speaking)

Google Product Launches

So dear G launched a whole new set of Products. Some thoughts-

1) Join up the Social Invite List here – it is called Google Plus. We hope it doesnt end up like Buzz http://www.google.com/buzz or Orkut https://groups.google.com/group/opensocial-api/?pli=1 or Plus One http://www.google.com/webmasters/+1/button/ or Wave (email killer) http://googlewave.blogspot.com/

When the biggest cloud computing company in the world announces a phased rollout to a product- we wonder if they are really sure on launching the product rollout or just were in a hurry again.

Machine learning wont work with social , chaps. Well not everything in social. And the Google Social Blog forgot to write about it http://googlesocialweb.blogspot.com/

Well anyways, even Google Finance’s automated announcements feed failed to pick many of their own  product launches (or it does in an automated manner depending on which time period you choose – yes still no social buttons up http://www.google.com/finance?q=google

Google+

Thanks for stopping by.We’re still ironing out a few kinks in Google+, so it’s not quite ready for everyone to climb aboard. But, if you want, we’ll let you know the minute the doors are open for real. Cool? Cool.

2) Google Web Fonts- Great product, how and hey http://googlewebfonts.blogspot.com/ when do you plan to monetize uhm  web fonts. Not that would be awesome. Not even a single ad on those pages- not even for philanthropy. or poor poets. or even Google Book Authors who self publish . Sound of silence….

http://www.google.com/webfonts/v2

3) Google Analytics gets some groove back. I really want to see much better integration of Google Apps and Google Analytics and Google Desktop search. Ditto for the interface. Enterprise software uses different fonts than retail software, dude. More fries, http://analytics.blogspot.com/ ?

Feature 1- Custom Reports for metrics I can slice and dice on my own

Feature 2 Awesome analytics for In-Page Analytics (beta feature) Beta is boring if overused. Try Theta maybe?

Feature 3 Daily Automated Alerts for Unusual Server /Traffic Activity

Feature 4 event Tracking is cool esp for understanding social media impact

It is still too early for mobile (in terms of traffic) as well as tablet analytics (?)

4) Angry Birds is still the best feature in Chrome  (but there are lots others at http://chrome.blogspot.com/) and esp http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2011/06/working-with-chromes-file-browser.html

Try http://chrome.angrybirds.com/

There are ways to make software that are not evil. Very very disappointed at total lack of monetization of this chrome app. Not even a T Shirt for me to buy ad . sighs

Funny thing- the product manager forgot to take off Facebook like button or even add the +1 button or even the Tweet this button.

Quo Vadis ?

5) What do you love?
