The talented Dirk Eddelbuettel has just announced that his new book is coming out this year. I would recommend this book for anyone trying to use R for analytics, Big Data or customized use cases especially if they have a need to speed up the computation times. Rcpp can speed up R by a huge magnitude, and thats because C++ comes closer to the metal.

Ajay- Describe the story so far for Gramener. What have been the key turning points ?
Naveen- All founders of Gramener are first generation entrepreneurs, started our careers with IBM were very successful in our corporate jobs with hefty pay packages, but always at the back of the mind can’t we work our ourselves and have FUN.
With this thought in mind 6 of us got together in 2010 to lay foundation for Gramener, with our consulting experience we wanted to get into business analytics , but soon we realized that there are lot many people who are doing great analytics but not an effective way of presentation, we wanted to establish niche for ourselves and create an offering to make “Data Consumption” easy and joyful.

Over 1300 people from around the globe participated in the 2011 survey. Also, highlights of earlier Data Miner Surveys are available online, including best practices shared by respondents on analytic success measurement, overcoming data mining challenges, and other topics. So I finally got my test plan accepted for a 1 month trial to the Oracle Public Cloud at https://cloud.oracle.com/ .
I am testing this for my next book R for Cloud Computing ( I have already covered Windows Azure, Amazon AWS, and in the middle of testing Google Compute).
Some initial thoughts- this Java cloud seemed more suitable for web apps, than for data science ( but I have to spend much more time on this).
I really liked the help and documentation and tutorials, Oracle has invested a lot in it to make it friendly to enterprise users.
Hopefully the Oracle R Enterprise ORE guys can talk to the Oracle Cloud department and get some common use case projects going.
In the meantime, I did a roundup on all R -Java projects.

Ajay- Describe how you started using R. What are some of the benefits you noticed on moving to R?
Jeff- I began using R in an internship while working on my undergraduate degree. I was provided with some unformatted R code and asked to modularize the code then wrap it up into an R package for distribution alongside a publication.
To be honest, as a Computer Science student with training more heavily emphasizing the big high-level languages, R took some getting used to for me. It wasn’t until after I concluded that initial project and began using R to do my own data analysis that I began to realize its potential and value. A neat technical innovation Proxmate is a browser plugin with a Chrome and Firefox version. It allows non US internet citizens to go to US sites , including Google’s Play Store, Spotify, Turntable and others
It is very professionally designed and now being used quite a lot.

I wish the same principle could be applied to create a fork of Chromium /Firefox to mash up with the Tor do not track privacy software. Or if a fork is too much work- even a plugin 🙂
