New Search Engine ?

Here is a new search engine called Kosmix which claims to help make the world more organized. Now I gave it the Google story test which means I compared it’s results to Google’s results for

1) Google / Kosmix

2) Jim Goodnight /Sergey Brin

3) Regression

4) Data Mining

Results were frighteningly good. Some screenshots are below. What Kosmix does is aggregate searches across various platforms like the Net, and adds Images, Videos Results so it looks like a report compiled on specific search word rather than a list of links like Google does.

Take a look.

Clearly Kosmix is the winner because it adds Google Search, You Tube search and Google Blog Search results as well to its results. I have talked a long time back on the need for Google to give more customization especially for business research users ( see item 10 b).

Google continues to be a list of Ranked web pages, while Kosmix is a new organized information source.I just hope it does not end up like www.cuil.com which started with a  big hype and is now claiming to be the biggest search engine in the world with the largest index  , but not the biggest users I guess.

Any search engine that places a category of Indian film actors when you search for “Ajay Ohri” can not do too well ! Period.

Weathering the Stormy Economy

Here is a conference you may want to visit. At first glance it may look like one of those self-help “free” webinars but it is a very relevant topic with a great speaker. Plus it is on the web.

Social Media Today builds Wordframe based communities like Smart Data Collective ( for data ,BI,Analytics people) Best of the Blogs ( for progressive bloggers), Energy Collective ( for Green energy enthusiasts, thinkers and researchers) ,Social Media Today ( for understanding and leveraging Social Media and Networks) and My VenturePad (for Entrepreneurs).

These communities basically work as online newspapers by aggregating and moderating the RSS feeds of thousands of bloggers (for some sites) and their sites. I have written on Wordframe’s concept of content driven communities and Ning’s concept of community driven content earlier.

Disclaimer- I have worked as an evangelist to SMT , have been awarded the Blogger of the Week once (for my article on R).

For other conferences you may also want to see AnalyticBridge ‘s page on conferences.

Disclaimer -I have been awarded the Member of the Month twice by them.

I like the third party apps of Ning better than the old outdated format and themes. One Ning application can actually serve as a competitor to Wordframe – that is the RSS application ( see feed on my page ).Wordframe has capabilities for even category level filters so Analytics category  feed goes to Smart Data ,Internet category feed gets published on Social Media (when i am lucky) and my attempts at poetry go to Best of The Blogs.

The Decision Stats group (on Linkedin) also has a group on AnalyticBridge.

But why join so many communities and go to webinars ? Because knowledge is useful and productive and fun – and I have a personal motto of learning one new thing a day .

Where do you get the time ?Just sleep one hour less and devote that one hour purely to your self learning for yourself.8 hours to the boss, 4-5 hours to the family.

1 hour to yourself ??

Sounds reasonable, eh  🙂

So try this one –

Linux for busy people

For people who always wanted to try out Linux but never had the time or the energy ( or courage to risk  moving to a Linux only environment) here is a great application which allows you to keep Linux as well as Windows for double booting environment . You need 256 mb ram and 5 gb hard disk and you are good to go. It is a single click download and install to try out Ubuntu Linux and it preserves your Windows too.

If you wanted to try out R with Linux , then it is an easy way out for you ( and me).

Saves quite a lot of money per desktop per OS and per office productivity software.

Sounds good to be true – well the site is http://wubi-installer.org/

Here are some screenshots courtesy of the site itself-

Ubuntu Desktop Preview

And if you need to install your favorite applications (like R , Subversion) and don’t want to command line your way the solution is quite simple – It is called Synaptic and it is free and downloadable here
