Creating Online Communities

Sometime back I had asked the question- How much do you think would it be to have the top 100 bloggers on SAS language on the same page, in a manner that the RSS feeds get updated on their own. The answer is here-

Wordframe. I had covered this software before in comparison to Ning.com and they proved favorable.

This is a small startup, East Europe based and very hard working. They allegedly wanted to become open source and had plans to create third party applications when I checked with them in January but this may be on hold for a new product launch.

Would sas.com pay for 1000$ set up fee and 200$ monthly fee for getting the top 100 SAS bloggers on their sascommunity.org website.

Would oracle pay for 1000$ set up fee and 200$ monthly fee for getting the top 100 Oracle bloggers on a website sponsored by them.

How much would Aster Data pay for say 100 bloggers about Hadoop ( ahem- assuming there are 100 people who CAN blog about Hadoop- a bit like Einstein’s 5 people in the world can understand his theory of relativity).

Wordframe. I had covered this software before in comparison to Ning.com and they proved favorable.

This is a small startup, East Europe and US based since more than a decade and very hard working. They allegedly wanted to become open source and had plans to create third party applications when I checked with them in January but this may be on hold for a new product launch.

Buddypress for Analytical Buddies??

Let us assume there are top 100 analysts in the world mostly using WordPress or Typepad or Blogger to make posts

Managing them is quite a challenge.

What is marketing ROI of analyst relationships for a Business Intelligence vendor- Curt Monash is the Aerosmith of Business Intelligence Analysts so he can tell it better.

How about a magical community where you just use their mostly Feedburner of Feedblitz RSS feeds to create a self automated community.

Serach Engine Optimization can be tricked by keeping that community website free from Google or Search Engines ( yes it can be done).

Use numerical etc as in Linkedin to spur rivalry by shifting their page positions up and down, or by clicking repeatedly on some posts to manipulate their views on blog posts.

What would SAS pay to have all SAS analysts in one webpage. or SPSS to have all SPSS analysts in one webpage.

Six months later suddenly open the website for search engines, and the RSS feed has downloaded all the posts of all the top 50 analysts of the world. Google advertsing wont matter because hey we have a mega vendor sponsor- while individual bloggers / analysts have no collective strength now as the community is too big.

So much blah blah-

What software would you use.

you can choose between

Ning.com ( but it mostly non Blog feeds based)

or Wordframe.com ( which interface and name sounds suspiciously like WordPress software)

Or you can choose a customized WordPress Solution called Buddy Press.

Here is the software-

BuddyPress

BuddyPress will transform an installation of WordPress MU into a social network platform.

BuddyPress is a suite of WordPress plugins and themes, each adding a distinct new feature. BuddyPress contains all the features you’d expect from WordPress but aims to let members socially interact. Read More ?

Note this was just a generic case study for making a case for open source based community softwares. Resemblance to any thing is a matter of coincidence – except for Curt Monash of course.

Cost of Customized WordPress Software for communties is a big zero- it is free and open source and tjousands of plugins can be installed and maintained for it.

Social Media Today builds Wordframe based communities like Smart Data Collective ( for data ,BI,Analytics people) Best of the Blogs ( for progressive bloggers), Energy Collective ( for Green energy enthusiasts, thinkers and researchers) ,Social Media Today ( for understanding and leveraging Social Media and Networks) and My VenturePad (for Entrepreneurs).

These communities basically work as online newspapers by aggregating and moderating the RSS feeds of thousands of bloggers (for some sites) and their sites. I have written on Wordframes concept of content driven communities and Nings concept of community driven content earlier.

Disclaimer- I have worked as an evangelist to SMT , have been awarded the Blogger of the Week once (for my article on R).

For other conferences you may also want to see AnalyticBridge s page on conferences.

Disclaimer -I have been awarded the Member of the Month twice by them.

I like the third party apps of Ning better than the old outdated format and themes. One Ning application can actually serve as a competitor to Wordframe that is the RSS application ( see feed on my page ).Wordframe has capabilities for even category level filters so Analytics category  feed goes to Smart Data ,Internet category feed gets published on Social Media (when i am lucky) and my attempts at poetry go to Best of The Blogs.

The Decision Stats group (on Linkedin) also has a group on AnalyticBridge.

But why join so many communities and go to webinars ? Because knowledge is useful and productive and fun and I have a personal motto of learning one new thing a day .

Where do you get the time ?Just sleep one hour less and devote that one hour purely to your self learning for yourself.8 hours to the boss, 4-5 hours to the family.

1 hour to yourself ??

Sounds reasonable, eh  🙂

So try this one –
